Enoch H. Chaffee: dob 02-11-1805 Peterboro, Madison Co., Ny dod 03-15-1887 Delton, Sauk Co., WI In early life, Enoch was a farmer and later a broker. He was Justice of the Peace and a member of the School Board in Kilbourn City, WI. He lived in Butternuts in 1829 and at one time Peterboro. He was Captain in the New York State Militia. Strictly honest and didn't drink or smoke. He died in Delton, Sauk Co., WI (as of 1880 census Enoch & Rhoda were living in Delton, Sauk Co.,WI).Enoch is buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery(Baraboo Cemetery), Baraboo, Sauk County, WI. Quote from the Baraboo Republic 03-16-1887: "E.H. Chaffee, of the town of Delton, died yesterday at 10:15 AM, aged 81 years, 1 month and 4 days. The funeral will be held at the residence of E. Eaton, on Saturday. The remains will be interred in the Baraboo Cemetery". Enoch also was involved in the UGRR(underground railroad)in Madison Co., NY. He grew up and worked with the famed Gerrit Smith, the founder of the UGRR, for many years during the slavery times. He helped many slaves escape to freedom. He worked with Joel Gillette Downer, another abolitionist, known as one of the top ten abolitionists in NY. Joel was the brother to Emmon Downer, who married one of Enoch's daughters, Martha Stranahan Chaffee. Per 1840 U.S. Federal census E.
